Stanway Pre-school in Colchester celebrated Halloween with a pumpkin-lit party this year. Rather than binning the carved pumpkins, which had been kindly donated by the children’s families, Michelle Hewett (Chair of the Committee) contacted the local food waste recycling plant in Halstead, operated by Tamar Energy. Tamar Energy collected the 160 kg of pumpkins and will convert them into renewable energy and biofertiliser, through the safe biological process known as anaerobic digestion (AD).  This process takes about one month – so the ‘green’ electricity generated will be ready in time to power local households’ Christmas lights!
